Geelong Reserves bounce back with 2-0 win

Our reserves wiped out the disappointment from last week with an excellent 2-0 win at home against Cairnlea. Before this game Cairnlea was 6 point ahead of us on the table, so this result has genuine meaning and significance.
The first half was even with both teams having dangerous moments. For Geelong, Shiva Kanapathy was lively on the left flank and Alec Kitanoski was required to collect some dangerous looking high balls into his box. Encouraging half chances were created but the red hot chance for goal did not materialise.
This all changed in the second half. 10 minutes in Alex Ilioski got on the wrong side of his man and was brought down in the box. With three penalty misses already this season Geelong players were hardly queuing up to take it. Alex Stefanovic stepped up and calmly placed the ball low and hard past the diving keeper.
About 10 minutes later a neat pass from Alex Ilioski found Michael Temelkovski in the box with space. The young striker controlled the ball with his first touch and blasted it past the keeper with his second. With Geelong now in the drivers seat Cairnlea could well have found themselves on the wring end of an ugly score line. Their defence was under constant pressure.
A glorious chance was created late in the game. Shiva fed a tantalising cross to Chris Balaburova. The chest and volley was majestic to see but unfortunately went millimetres over the bar. Had this one gone in, it would have had Goal of the Season stamped all over it.
All in all this was a terrific display against good opposition. No wonder coach Steve Gaitainis had a smile on his face after the game.
