GRFA Men Notch-Up Big Win

On Sunday, our 3rds won 7:1 @ home against Deakin University. This win pushes the team up to 5th place on the Ladder just outside the Top4 on goal-difference.

A big contributing factor to this week's success was the injection of youth into the team. Venga, Marcus, Koore, and Uki all made their debuts and played significant roles in this win.

In the opening minutes of the match, Miki and Peter exchanged passes three times before Miki broke through the Deakin defence striking a fierce low shot into the far post of the goal. Miki shortly after won us a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Georgi quickly claimed the kick, he struck a perfect bender over the wall and into the roof of the net, leaving the keeper motionless on his goaline. The two early goals settled the team and we enjoyed long periods of ball-possession for the remainder of the half.

We finished the half with two more goals. Peter scored the first with a fine individual effort, running past a number of defenders before slotting the ball past the keeper (he needed 3 attempts to beat the keeper). Then Venga scored after latching onto a through ball and firing his shot off the near post, into goal.

Deakin began the second half strongly testing our defence. Uki, Koore, Becker, Shayka and Stefce all stood strong and repelled the Deakin advances successfully.

Later in the match, Venga scored his second goal with a fine turn & strike from the edge of the box. His strike was impressive bouncing from the underside of the crossbar and into the net.  Marcus scored our 6th goals after Georgi played him through with an elegant pass. Marcus hit his shot first-time from outside the box, driving his shot high into the top left-hand corner of the goal, the keeper could only stand and admire.

Deakin scored their goal after capitalising on a turn-over in our attacking half. They moved the ball forward quickly, striking a shot past Efto for their consilation goal. We scored a 7th goal which I couldn't see from our showers but Marcus tells me he scored it with a half-volley from distance.

Congrats guys on a fine performance and our best win this year.

Next up we play Bell Park away @ 1:00pm, hope to see you all at the match!
